A Winning Season
After many agonizing seasons for the girls’ basketball team, they’re finally getting it right. With a record of 12 and 12 this season the Varsity basketball team has more than doubled their record from the past three seasons combined (5-47). The team went from no conference wins last year finishing the conference with 5-4 record.
Working on dribbling, shooting, and defense has been a big part of the girl’s practices. The team isn’t full of 6-footers but what they do have is working for them. The only important thing to remember is that to win the game, you must score more points than your opponent, and that’s exactly what they’re doing this year.
The team’s motto last year was “We Believe,” this season it’s “Expect Victory” and that’s just what they’re doing. The team no longer hopes to win but they expect to. “No loss is a close one anymore, we either win or we lose, there are no moral victories,” said Coach Mark Fitzgerald. The team is making real progress. ”The old ACC is gone, we don’t want to see them anymore,” commented Coach Fitz.
Even though the Varsity isn’t filled with tall players, they like to work the ball down low. Most of the Chargers points come from the paint and the free throw line. If there is one thing the team has improved on since previous seasons, it is their free throw percentage. They have more attempts and success at the line.
The Chargers have had some key victories this season along with some tough losses. The team swept rival Aurora Christian and Marian Central High Schools. Some of those tough losses have come in the home stretch of the season. The Chargers lost an important game to Guerin College Prep on January 30, knocking the team out of a chance at 2nd place. The Chargers split with Guerin, finishing the season 1-1 against them. Another big loss came against Wheaton Academy on February 5, sealing the deal for Wheaton Academy and Guerin to finish in the top two of the conference.
The Chargers had one regular season game left against the Mount Assisi Academy Eagles right before heading into the playoffs. The team could not come away with a victory on February 11 which put the team under .500 going into their first regional game against Sandwich on Monday, February 15.
The three seeded Chargers beat sixth seeded Sandwich on Monday night for their first regional game win in seasons. Now the girls get another shot at Rosary High School on Wednesday, February 17 at Yorkville High School.
The Chargers have come a long way this season and aren’t finished yet. They’re setting a new standard for the ACC girls’ basketball program. This year’s team starts a new era for the Chargers.
