Golf Ends on High Note
The Chargers’ golf season finally came to a close with the state tournament. Our own Jeff Hund made it to the state competition and took 57th place out of approximately 100 participants. When asked about the tournament, Hund replied, “It was a very tough course and all of the other players were quite talented. I played my best the entire season, and it finally paid off in the end. Making state was my goal, which I worked for through all my practice during the season.”
The rest of the Chargers had a successful season as well. Aside from winning their first tournament in 25 years, they did well in conference matches. The team went 3-4 in conference. Each loss was only by a few strokes, which is much improved from last season. Junior Joe Karkos took first place in the Genoa tournament and sixth place in the city meet. Sophomores Ryan Hareld and Taylor Nelson greatly improved their averages from last season, becoming vital parts of the varsity team. At the end of the season meeting, Coach Jim Parker said, “I’m very proud of the team and the way they played. Each player was an important part of the team that contributed in numerous ways during the season. I look forward to next year to see how much more we can improve and work even harder.” Overall, the boys’ golf season was a huge success full of improvements, teamwork, and dedication.
The newly formed girls’ golf team had a great start to its first season in school history. Even though it only had a few members, the team still competed in dual matches with other schools. The team is looking for new players for the next season, so if anyone is interested about playing golf, come out and join the team. Charger golf has had one of its most memorable years in its forty-year history.
