Charger Football: Season Recap

The Charger football team had a tough time getting much of anything going this year, closing out the season 0-9. The Chargers dealt with some tough breaks that made them unable to pull out a victory. The season got off to a tough start led by senior captains Mike Adams, Mark Brauweiler, and Sebastian Wesley. They fell short of a comeback, losing 28-20 to the Mendota Trojans. The Chargers saw themselves tied at their next game in the third quarter with Harvard, losing momentum and collapsing under the pressure, losing 42-21.

They had a difficult path in front of them, facing a Suburban Catholic Conference schedule that was stacked with teams that were all capable of making the playoffs.  Four did—Immaculate Conception, Montini, Driscoll Catholic, and St. Francis. Losses accumulated, until the Chargers finally saw a window of opportunity in Woodstock. They made a few defensive stops leading up to when the Chargers marched down the field and fell just short of scoring when Mike Adams reached the ball out on fourth down and supposedly fell short of the end zone. The Chargers scored twice in the second half on big receptions from Mark Brauweiler and a run by Mike Adams, but were not able to pull out a win. There were a few big plays to see from the Chargers with the remaining portion of the season but none enough to secure a win.

The Chargers found themselves plagued with different problems this season, ranging from injuries and ineligibility, to inconsistency. Junior linebacker Tyler Scott puts it into perspective. “We never played four quarters of football. We were poor tacklers, inconsistent on both sides of the line, couldn’t cover the pass and never really established a passing or running game. There were some high points of our play but too many low points to overcome in order to win.”

Charger football is already gearing up for next season, starting off-season training at the end of November. There will be some valuable losses from the senior class, most notably wide receiver/cornerback Mark Brauweiler, tight end/defensive end Matt Wagner, offensive lineman Sebastian Wesley, wide receiver Tom Barkei, and star quarterback/defensive end/safety/linebacker/kicker/punter Mike Adams. The Chargers have a lot of experienced varsity players coming back for next season, but will miss its seniors. They have their work cut out for them, but the Chargers remain hopeful as they get ready for next season.
