Administration Ends Tradition

The dance team’s year starts the same as every year. They begin with try-outs in April, and once the teams are chosen, they begin practices. They began to prepare a home hip hop routine that they take to camp to qualify for nationals in Orlando. This year both Varsity and JV teams did very well at camp. Both teams won superior trophies with numerous blue ribbons. Varsity’s home routine placed first, earning them an automatic qualification for nationals. The Varsity team was also given the Leadership Award which is voted on by all other dance teams and all UDA staff members.

The dance team returned home to start their normal routine of practices. They learned new dances to perform at football games and perfected their national routine. As the fall season progressed, the dance team was notified that they were not going to be allowed to attend nationals this year. This crushed the dance team members’ hopes, dreams, and enthusiasm for the year. All seven seniors were depressed that their final year would not be as special. Also, other members who have never attended nationals were disappointed that their opportunity was taken away from them. When asked to share their feelings about the school administration’s decision to cancel the team’s trip to Nationals, dancers respectfully opted to not comment.

Although this great experience was taken away, the Varsity members still have to be prepared mentally and physically for other events that are yet to come. Even though this year won’t be the same, the dance team members are focused on making special memories, performing new routines, and reaching new goals.

Dance Team Denied

Why did adminstration pull this?  Have you asked the dance team coach or admin?  That would complete the article instead of leaving it a mystery.

Unclear

Well, from what I was told by members of the dance team, they have recieved different reasons each time they asked why it was cancelled, so it is unclear why. Perhaps a more appropriate headline would be Dance Team Denied with a subtitle Administration puts the kabosh on nationals. or something along those lines.

Re: Unclear

Better and say Central Times will follow up on the story. .As journalists we have to try to flush out the truth, and news staff need to approach administration about the issue.

 thanks!

Re: Unclear

I talked with a member of the dance team today who insisted that if they had included the various reasons the administration decided to cancel it would make the administration look bad and the article would be in bad taste. I informed them of your concern about the bias of the article and they said they would see what they could do to try and explain the administration’s reasoning to make the article more fair, but from what it sounds like, the administration had no good reason. Your call.
