Key Club Helps Homeless, Serves Pancakes

The ACC Key Club has been off to a great start in recent weeks, raising money for the homeless and helping out at the Kiwanis pancake breakfast.

Their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” fund raiser has been an incredible success. Thanks to everyone’s contributions they have raised over $750 as of March 12th! The premise of the campaign is that each teacher who wishes to “compete” receives a decorated milk gallon in which to collect donations. At the end of the collection, the teacher who has contributed the most will receive eternal bragging rights as well as a pie of their choice. The most exciting aspect of the campaign has no doubt been the fierce competition between everyone’s two favorite deacons, Deacon Puscas and Deacon Hilt. Both have been involved in a cut-throat race for first place ever since the milk gallons were distributed. As of press time, the winner is still unknown but will be announced as soon as the last cent has been counted.

Members of the Key Club also participated in the 58th Annual Pancake Day, hosted at ACC by the Kiwanis Club of Aurora, their parent organization and sponsor. The enormous event was held in the cafetorium from 7 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, March 15th. Early estimates suggest that the event attracted even more than last year’s total of 1,500 guests. Those who attended were treated to an all-you-can-eat meal of pancakes and sausage served with milk, orange juice, and coffee. The admission price was a mere $5 for individuals or $20 for families of four or more. For decades, the event has been one of the principal fund raisers for the Kiwanis Club, and in recent years they have raised more than $15,000 on each Pancake Day! I had the pleasure of helping out at Saturday’s event, and was pleased to see that despite its scale, it was extremely well-organized and a lot of fun. We Key-Clubbers were assigned to set tables and assist with cleanup during the last hour or so of the day. However, despite the thousands of pancakes that were served, this last assignment was made easy by a whole slew of helping hands. In fact, within 45 minutes of closing time, you wouldn’t have been able to tell that we were there; the entire cafetorium floor had even been mopped. All in all, it was one of the neatest fund raisers I have ever been to, and I look forward to participating next year.

Don’t forget! The Key Club is still accepting new members. Just stop by the library after school on any Wednesday to see what we’re up to!
