On Friday, February 8th and 9th, the Chess team of Aurora Central Catholic went to state for their biggest competition ever. Mr. Scarbeary, accompanied by his daughter, took the team to the Peoria Center where the tournament was held. A total of seven games were to be played in a two day period. At the end trophies were handed out to the top three teams. Over 150 teams had come from different schools, and one of them was the ACC Chess team. There are eight boards that get to play in the tournament, Board One being the best. Starting off with a 100-plus placement, the team soon struggled their way to the 30s, then settled around the 70s. In the end the team had won three games and lost four games, beating last year’s score. It was a long ride home for the team, but they were all happy. Stopping for some food, the team arrived back at school around six and said their goodbyes. The team overall did an excellent job this year, adding some new team members and preparing for next year. The team hopes next year will be the best!
