"Unfriend" Makes Friends with the Dictionary
Have you ever “unfriended” someone? Well, the New Oxford American Dictionary has made “unfriend” the word of the year. Because of the evolution of our language, N.O.A.D. has lowered their standards on the admission of words into the collection of words that is the English language.
Common internet slang has become a prevalent part of our society and thus noticed worldwide like “LOL”, “OMG” and now “unfriend”. There are over 300 million people on Facebook worldwide and the use of these choice words, or slang, is changing the English language as we know it.
“Unfriend” became friendly with the dictionary because of Facebook. At any given point you can “unfriend” one of your Facebook friends for various reasons. It became so popular to “unfriend” online that people started to use the word in the real world. When you get in a fight with one of your friends, you can just “unfriend” them. Thanks to Facebook we can officially “unfriend” someone.
It has also been announced that words such as, fermium, funemployed, zombiebank, birther, choice mom, death panel, teabagger, brown state, green state, ecotown, delab, and tramp stamp are added into the dictionary this year.
Internet slang has integrated itself into the English language. Although these terms are classified as “tech-savvy” terms, they still hold as little credibility as websites like Wikipedia. Stand for a language to be proud of and “unfriend” our evolutionary downfall of recent language.
