Who Fell Down the Rabbit Hole this Time?
Oh not again! That Alice really needs to watch where she’s going. Alice has fallen down the rabbit hole once again in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The director, Tim Burton, has created a new adventure from this classic tale. In this new version of Alice in Wonderland, Alice, who is played by Mia Wasikowska, returns to Wonderland once more at the age of 19. She reunites with her old friends like the White Rabbit, played by Michael Sheen, the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp, and the Cheshire Cat, who is played by Stephen Fry. The only problem is she can’t remember ever meeting them, or of ever being in Wonderland! Alice is remembered by the many creatures of Wonderland from her last visit, and many are anxious to have her go with them. The Red Queen, played by Helena Bonham Carter and the White Queen, played by Anne Hathaway, especially want Alice to come to their side of the kingdom. Both Queens, who are sisters, are fighting for the ultimate crown of ruling over all of Wonderland. The Red Queen sends the Knave of Hearts, who is played by Crispin Glover, to find and capture Alice. The Knave of Hearts is actually posed as the Red Queen’s love interest, who is strangely attracted to large things. Hence he likes the Red Queen because of her enormously large head.
Burton portrays Wonderland as a magnificent, strange place with even stranger characters. The supposed ringleader of these misfit characters is the Mad Hatter. The Mad Hatter worked for the White Queen sometime before this war of the queens as her royal head dresser. He has quite a split personality, one minute he will be nice and “normal” and the next he will be talking in a deep voice and wanting to hit things. This is where he acquires the name the Mad Hatter. Johnny Depp really captures the bizarre essence of this character to the fullest. This is no shock seeing the wide variety of characters he had betrayed before, such as Sweeny Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Ichabod Crane, and many more. This enticing cast has really brought to life a new vision of Alice in Wonderland without diminishing the original tale. Alice also meets new characters such as Bayard, played by Timothy Spall, the Dormouse, played by Barbara Windsor, and one very important character the Jabberwocky, played by Christopher Lee. The Jabberwocky is supposed to be this fearsome beast that is to be the champion for the Red Queen, who will fight the champion of the White Queen. Once Alice accepts the fact that she is the only true champion for the White Queen, she regains the memories of her first visit to Wonderland. Tim Burton has really succeeded in creating what might be a new classic for generations to come. If you’re looking to fall into a good fantasy/action, go see Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, now in theaters everywhere.
