Music Videos Compared (80's Vs. Today)

When you watch a music video, you probably never think about the fact that they have been around since before you were born, do you? Well they have, the first music video to come out was Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen, in 1975. This video has many differences to the modern day music video. In this video and many videos from the 1970’s, it shows the artists singing live, unlike many videos today, which usually have a small movie to go along with the song. One of the first videos to have a story to go along with the song was Billie Jean by Michael Jackson, made in 1982, although even this video was mostly Jackson singing and dancing to the music and not a story. Even videos that have a story more like what you would find today have differences to what you see now. Many times current videos included things like big parties on big boats that sometimes have absolutely nothing to do with the song, but back in the 80’s if there was a story for the video, it normally had more to do with the song it was intended for. In old music videos the singer was usually very overdramatic, in newer videos, the artist is usually less dramatic.

Things that videos from the eighties and today have in common are that they have always been a way to show off a new song from an artist. They usually show the artist singing in clips, or all, of the video. Another is that the artists usually lipsync in the video, unless it was recorded live. Many times there are extras in videos to make it more interesting. There are many more differences than similarities in old and new music videos, but they still do the same thing, entertain the fans.
